Every musician is an artist in their own right. Whether just starting out or a seasoned professional, musicians have a true passion for expressing themselves through the music that they play and write. For every musician, there is a deep connection to the instrument that they choose to play. Everyone’s reasons are different for playing the instrument that they do, but whatever the reason it is truly remarkable to watch a group of talented musicians get together and play with such passion.
As one of the band’s many supporters, I was able to sit down and discuss this topic with each of the members of Batteries Not Included, a local pop punk band based out of West Bend, WI.
Zach - Drums

The first question I asked was the most obvious - why did you choose the drums?
“I chose the drums - not because it was my first choice, but because it was something I knew would make my dad proud.”
I totally understand wanting to make your parents proud - I chose to play the violin in my younger years because I thought it would make my grandmother proud, but I didn’t stick with it or join a band or anything like you guys. So, what instrument was your first choice?
“My first choice originally was piano and woodwind instruments.”
Interesting choices - not at all close to the drums. Next, I asked about what his favorite songs to play are and why?
“My favorite songs to play are Holiday by Green Day because it’s a lot of fun and our two originals Half Dollar and Undone because, again, it’s a lot of fun, but they’re songs I can heavily relate to.”
Alright, so it seems like you have a good time playing the drums, so it was definitely a good choice to stick with them. I also wanted to know - what is something you want everyone to know about the role of the drummer?
“We are phenomenal at multitasking and keeping order in the chaos since that’s kinda our jobs.”
Okay, Zach, that totally makes sense - you are who the other guys are relying on to keep the beat. So, what is your favorite thing about being a part of BNI?
“That we have fun ‘cause we may be able to put on a professional face, but we all act like fucking idiots like what friends do.”
Awesome, Zach - these are great answers! But, I had to ask one final question - if you had unlimited funds and could pick custom anything, what would be your dream instrument?
“My dream drums would be a Pearl drum set with some soft head drum beaters, two high toms, two floor toms, and all Zildjian/Sabian brand hi hat, ride cymbal, and three different sizes of crash cymbals.”
I’ll be honest, I’m not 100% sure I know what any of that means, but it sounds like you really know what you’re talking about and have a true passion for playing the drums. BNI is lucky to have you!
